The Five Aggregates Of Clinging

We cling to phenomena which is impermanent. Everything we see, hear, smell, taste, feel, and think is impermanent. It is our attachment to impermanent objects that is the source of our suffering. When we like something there is suffering, and when we dislike it, there is also suffering.

The image we see, the sound we hear, the odor we smell, the flavor we taste, the sensation we feel, and the thought we think are all impermanent, and so is the duration in which our senses are in contact with the object or phenomena. The consciousness that arises from contact with the phenomena is also impermanent. We don't know how to enjoy and appreciate the moment without letting go. We always want more. It is this clinging, rooted in ignorance, that is the source of a lot of our pain and suffering.

The five aggregates are: form; feeling; perception; volitional formations; consciousness. The first aggregate, form (sight, sound, smell, taste, bodily sensation), is the material or physical realm. Feeling, perception, volitional formations, and consciousness comprise the mental realm. For consciousness to arise, one of the sense bases must come in contact with phenomena. Our feeling and perception are what determines if it is a pleasant, unpleasant or neutral experience. So, we can control our emotions, if we are aware from the time the senses make contact with the object or phenomena.

It is the same with thoughts. If we are aware of the thoughts as they are arising, we can put-aside unpleasant thoughts, choosing not to entertain certain subjects that are sure to bring dissatisfaction. This should not be construed as suppression of unpleasant thoughts, but training the mind to function in a healthy way.
